Geography Funnies;
or is it?
"I know the Yemen thing complicates the war on terror, but on the plus side, getting attacked is the only way we Americans learn about world geography."

Greetings!
Welcome to the first edtion of the Juniper GIS newsletter. |
 |
Our New Blog |
It took us awhile, but we've done it. You can visit the Juniper GIS blog and interact with us about all things GIS, or whatever else you care to comment on. Go to www.JuniperGIS.com/blog.
Why is our blog different than any other GIS blog?
- It's much smaller than any or all of the ESRI blogs (so far only John & Patti).
- Everyone who comments on our blog must be wearing a tropical print shirt while entering comments.
- You may find your picuture in this blog sometime (if you can bike 60 miles to Mt. Bachelor).

E-Learning class |
|
Working with Geodatabases, a 2-day class, is now available online in two different formats.
-
Self-paced version allows you to download the manual and the data. You work through it at your own pace. When you have questions, you can email them to John. For a little extra, the manual and data can be mailed to you.
-
E-learning version takes place within a designated time period and there are online chats. You can interact with John and the other students and see their questions and comments, as well.
-
The newest version in March will probably even have a video of John teaching this class. You may be part of the video audience, when you sign up for the January class in Portland. |

Juniper John's Sage Advice of the Month |
Using ModelBuilder to speed and simplify basic tasks
Most users think that it is only worth creating a model when you are doing analysis or large processes, but I create models "on-the-fly" for even one or two step operations.
For example, I needed to convert about a dozen polygon layers to raster grids. I opened Modelbuilder using the ModelBuilder button on the standard toolbar, added the first polygon and the Polygon to Raster tool, and set a few parameters. Then for each new polygon layer I needed to process, rather than having to open the tool from ArcToolbox and completely fill in the dialog box, I opened the tool in Modelbuilder, changed the input and output, ran the model, and I was done. Of course, if I were a good Python programmer, I could have written a script, but this was much quicker. When I was done, I just deleted the model because I know I can create these small models as I need them.

Layla's Latitudes & Attitudes |
Layla has been supervising Juniper GIS operations from her director's chair since September 2006. She would love to have her own GPS unit so her people would let her roam freely, knowing she could always find her way back home. Go to Google earth to see Layla's very favorite place Lat: 44.034405, Long: -121.253910. "It might just look like sagebrush and scrub to you, but it smells like a world of excitement to me. Just ask your dog buddy. I'm sure she or he will agree." --Layla Layla's tip of the month: "If you find your land locations sitting out in the middle of the ocean, you better take John's projection class." | |

I hope you will sign on to our blog and let us know what information you would like to see in the blog and in the newsletter.
