Dear Patti,

Welcome to our Winter 2012 newsletter.  We hope the new year brings all of you happiness, health and prosperity.

As the economy ebbs and flows we continue to evolve in how we conduct our business.  We are now developing Juniper GIS on the basis that partnerships are the best way to share GIS and explore the world.  We are pleased to welcome eGIS, InsideNGO, and the Jane Goodall Institute as a few of the new organizations we are working with on projects.

At the same time, we continue to pursue our ongoing relationships with the Society for Conservation GIS (SCGIS), Global Visions International (GVI), GeoSpatial Training Services, and the NW ESRI User Conference.  Through our new partnerships, we were able to explore GIS opportunities in Africa and add a new Juniper GIS Authorized instructor in Brazil.  We look forward to making new friends and GIS partners in 2012.

Juniper GIS goes fully international: Cecilia, a new Juniper GIS authorized instructor, teaches her first class in Brazil

The same week John was teaching a Juniper GIS class in Nairobi, Kenya (UTM Zone 37 South), Ceciilia Cronemberger de Faria was teaching a Juniper GIS class in Teresopolis, Brazil, (UTM Zone 23 South), and a month later John was teaching in Hawaii, (UTM Zone 4 North).

Cecilia, a former SCGIS Scholar, became a Juniper GIS Authorized instructor in July, 2011, working with John for two weeks teaching the SCGIS scholars in Davis, California.

For her first class, Cecilia translated the Juniper GIS course into Portuguese and created exercises with local data. Cecilia looks forward to teaching more classes in Brazil.

Classes in the Atlanta Area

We have developed a new partnership with eGIS & Associates, and Keck & Wood Training Center to offer Juniper GIS classes in the Atlanta Metro area. We hope these classes will help to meet the needs of eGIS clients and our clients in the eastern half of the US. If you like our classes, please forward this to any of your friends in that area.  For more information, go to

Exploring GIS opportunities in Ethiopia

InsideNGO is an international organization that provides support services for NGO's around the world.  They provided resources for us to explore GIS needs in Ethiopia, Kenya and Uganda. In Ethiopia, John was surprised when his taxi driver even knew what GIS was. The taxi driver, Brook, was impressed to learn John was a GIS "master" and immediately introduced John to Eyob Teshome, an ESRI authorized instructor there in Addis Ababa, who had John teach a ModelBuilder session for Eyob's class. The next day John got a chance to see some of the beautiful countryside with Aweke, a guide from Safari Ethiopia tours.

Onward to Uganda:  GIS & Chimpanzees

John and Patti flew from Nairobi, Kenya to Kampala, Uganda,

where we were met by the representatives from the Jane Goodall Institute.  Simon and Augustine took great care of us for the week and provided lodging for us at the Sonsa Field Station for chimpanzee research.

We taught a one-week class, "Working with ArcGIS for Environmental Analysis"  at the Nyabyeya Forestry College near Masindi.

The Jane Goodall Institute brought together people with a common interest to learn GIS for

the week.  All students were selected because they worked for organizations that impacted chimpanzee habitat in western

Uganda. The project goal for these organizations is to create a continuous corridor of habitat that allows the chimpanzees more range in these areas.

SCGIS Kenya hosts an advanced class in Nairobi

Lucy Waruingi coordinated an Advanced GIS class for John to teach when he was in Nairobi.  ESRI East Africa offered its computer lab as the location for this two-day class.  Lucy is a founder of SCGIS Kenya and an active member of SCGIS International, and the students represented the SCGIS Kenya membership and its various conservation organizations. A representative was there from Kenya OpenData to discuss the various types of GIS datasets available in Kenya and the efforts to develop and share information.

Bernard, works for Save the Elephants and was an SCGIS scholar a few years ago.  He continues to take John's classes whenever he can.

GIS Schedule, or Consider Co-Hosting

We have been unsuccessful in the past few years at offering a schedule of open enrollment classes on a regular basis.  However, if your organization has four to six people in need of GIS training, we can help you coordinate a class in your area and find other agencies to share the costs.  Here are the classes we have scheduled.

E-Learning Classes

We are continuing to convert our classes to an eLearning format, and to work with GeoSpatial Training Services to offer classes that will be useful to our clients. John is currently working on adding"Spatial Analyst" and "ArcGIS for Natural Resources" to our eLearning opportunities.  This year we would like to add some video components to our classes.  We will also be adding some "Juniper GIS Quick Guides" with supporting information for some of our regular presentations on Projections and ModelBuilder.
